Okay, I screwed up. They have already had the groundbreaking ceremony for the ice palace they're going to build this year. And I missed it. Apparently, it was held on September 10! They are starting to break ground already because they have to place the concrete pilings and electric cables for the light and sound system. I missed the announcement because it was in the St. Paul paper, not the Minneapolis paper. Damn, damn, damn!

I promised [livejournal.com profile] kijjohnson I will track down and call the architect by Wednesday. Hold me to it, folks. I imagine he'll be a little surprised to get the call saying, "I'm writing a novel where the heroine is the architect who designs the St. Paul Winter Carnival ice palace, and I was wondering you'd be willing to meet with me."

It's not as bad as ringing someone to ask if you can use their translation of a poem in a role-playing game. I mean, most people have at least heard of the concept of novels.

He'll probably be flattered.

Dang! Missing that sucks. It wouldn't have even occured to me that stuff would be happening this early, although if you think about it it makes sense, what with not wanting to work in the ground after a freeze and all.

But this means that the design would need to be finalized really early. Hope that doesn't screw up your plot too much!

He'll probably think it's cool. Several years ago I was doing research for a long-abandoned novel and I spent a delightful afternoon with a Sargeant of the Columbus Police Department. He seemed fascinated to be talking to me. He showed me cold case files (with real crime scene photos!) and answered all my questions. Practically talked my ear off.

The best part? His name was...wait for it...Sgt. Jim Longerbone.

Yep. Longerbone. The sort of name that you'd never get away with in fiction. I love it.

Argh! That's horrible that you missed the groundbreaking!

Good luck in your meeting with the architect!
