2026 52 Card Project: Week 41: New York
Oct. 18th, 2026 05:31 pmMy brother Chet's contribution to my Year of Adventure was an incredibly generous offer to fly Eric and me to his home in Irvington, New York, just outside the city. He and his wife Heather were consummate hosts during our five-day visit, and we enjoyed ourselves immensely.
The problem with trying to distill a trip like that into a single collage is that I keep wanting to cram in more and more elements. We had delicious meals that Chet cooked as well as wonderful dinners in restaurants. Chet and Heather gave us advice on taking the train into the city to Grand Central Station. They accompanied us into the city on the first day, when we went to see the medieval art at the Cloisters, including the famous unicorn tapestries. We walked through Central Park and around the Rockefeller Center and St. Patrick's Cathedral, and then after dinner at an Italian restaurant, the four of us went to see The Book of Mormon.
The next day, Eric and I ventured into the city ourselves and spent the afternoon exploring the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We particularly enjoyed the collection of European oil paintings, but also paid homage to the collection of arms and armory, the Greco-Roman collection, and the sculpture courtyard. After a little confusion about the subway, we took a subway to Brooklyn, where we met up with Chet, Heather, and a niece and a couple of nephews at a tapas dining room. That was both fun and delicious.
The next day, we borrowed Heather's car to drive to The Farmer and the Fish in New Salem, where we met up with Eric's sister Kristin and her husband Tom for lunch. The food was great--I had my first lobster roll. When we got back, we went out to one of Chet's favorite spots to hang out, the Red Hat on the River, where we enjoyed the sunset, drinks, and conversation.
Our last day, following a suggestion from my niece, Eric and I took a ferry down the East River to the DUMBO section of Brooklyn and walked around exploring, stopping for lunch at a Thai restaurant. Of course, we had to stop for a ceremonial visit at the Strand Bookstore. That night, we had a lovely dinner out in Irvington.
We flew home safely the next day, just in time for me to get felled by a rather nasty cold (which is why this collage is late). But I'm back on my feet and remembering the trip with pleasure. I really have NOT traveled much--my last airline flight was in 2018. But it was great fun, and I am excited to plan travel in the future. Chet and Heather said we are welcome to come back to New York anytime.
