To celebrate the end of a long year and all the hard work we've been doing to teach the kids science and send them off to space camp, we gathered on Saturday for the Space Camp Launch, which was held at the farm of the parents of one of the chaperones. The day was devoted to aeronautics: kids brought kites, and the rockets and hot air balloons they had made (the latter out of tissue paper) and we spent a happy afternoon of a gorgeous day eating barbecue and launching stuff into space. See the entire group of pictures here. Delia's hot air balloon flew very well (they heated the air inside with a propane burner). She launched it several times and it never got trapped in a tree, unlike some of the other balloons.

Here's a great one of Delia:

Here is Fiona, retrieving Delia's balloon after one of the launches:

Look at that happy smile on Delia's face in that first picture, folks. You did that. Thank you again for making a wonderful year's project possible for her and all the other happy kids who went.

In a really wonderful effort to give parents and friends an idea of what our children have been learning at Space Camp, the teachers and chaperones helped the kids assemble a mock up of the Space Shuttle in the school gym, and the kids showed off posters, pictures, quizzes, mock tasks that astronauts might do in space, a PowerPoint presentation, and a mock mission to present to the parents.

That mock space shuttle was really cool. They even rigged with a pulley system overhead so that they could "open the bay doors" on the top of the shuttle.

Here is Delia helping with the set up:

See more pictures of the set up here and the presentation here. All the various images, including the pictures of the kids taking the science classes at Leonardo's Basement in the weeks leading up to Space Camp, can be found here. Major kudos to Andy Peterson, Reach for the Stars' media consultant, who took these and all the other wonderful pictures during the whole experience.

STILL IN THE SAME ORANGE PANTS WITH MISMATCHED SOCKS! Edited to add: Ohhhhh, and mismatched shoes, too. And I'll bet you anything she hasn't combed her hair all week. Get her away from her parents, and the girl goes wild.

I had asked previously that people spread the word in their own journals about raising money for space camp, and so many of you rose to the occasion for us that we reached our goal.

If you like, it would be great if those of you who posted my appeal now post this link in your own journals, to pass along as my thank you. It is the link to all my entries tagged "space camp," and it gives you a chance to see pictures of my little girl (whom you have all made so happy) enjoying space camp, as well as links to pictures of all the other kids who got to go. Here is a short video greeting from some of the other kids. Thanks again to you all from me, Delia, and over forty-five other happy kids who have been given a life-changing experience through your support!

That's my girl, once again with the orange pants and two differently colored socks.

Here are the rest of Wednesday's images.

Here are Monday's pictures. There are other ones of Delia in the link, too.

A nice one of Delia (note the karate "Fight Like a Girl" shirt).

An impish one of Delia

Delia called right as I was editing this entry. It was a very quick call, because other kids were waiting for the phone, but she reported, "We went on the simulator today. You get buckled into the seat, and they spin you around, and it makes you feel G-force pressure on your chest and shoulders. The other ride we went on was "Space Shot," which is sort of like the Power Tower at Valleyfaire. You get shot up into the air and then come down again."

She talked extremely fast, and there was a lot of noise in the background, so it was a little difficult to understand her. She said she is having a lot of fun, and to say hi to Fiona for her. I will give more reports as I receive them.

Since quite a few of you have asked, I am going to be posting information about the Space Camp Delia will be attending because--let's be blunt--we have to raise money to make it possible for her to go. This post will be about the fundraising in general. I will follow it, periodically, with information about the various specific fundraiser events we will be holding periodically until she leaves to attend the camp in May.
