I've created a wizard rock set list which adheres pretty closely to the plot of the seven books, book by book. I chose a variety of artists I particularly like, that have done a good job of dramatically presenting various scenes or just the feeling the books evoke, through their lyrics and music.

Here's how I'd tell the story of Harry Potter through Wizard Rock songs )

Your suggestions, additions, deletions? I'm probably relying most heavily on Riddle™ and Ministry of Magic, with a goodly dose of Harry and the Potters, Draco and the Malfoys, the Parselmouths, the Weasel King, the Remus Lupins, the Whomping Willows, and Oliver Boyd & the Remembralls.

Here's one of the songs ("House Song") on their new album which has just been released, Magic is Might. This one really made me laugh. Jason Munday of MoM and Alex Carpenter of the Remus Lupins are the Gryffs, Kristina Horner of The Parselmouths and John Noe of Potter cast are among the Slytherins, Luke Conard and Ryan Seiler (MoM) are the Ravenclaws, and Christian Caldera of Oliver Boyd and the Remembralls is the Hufflepuff. Order a hard copy of the album here or on iTunes here.

Here's another song on the album, 'Don't Leave' )

Jason Munday did an interesting little informative video about the process of composing that song:

How to write a MOM song )

Found out about this here. Alex Carpenter of The Remus Lupins, Jason Munday of Ministry of Magic and Kristina Horner of the Parselmouths offer this parody ("My Eclipse") of 3OH!3 and Ke$ha's "My First Kiss." The point being that as a role model, Bella frankly, well, sucks.

You can download the song here. Here are the lyrics )

Alex Carpenter has just released an EP of music for The Hunger Games, by the way, called Freedom in Panem. Download it here.

A blog which reviews wizard rock albums has just been started, Wizard Rock Review. The woman writing it is here on Twitter. Friend [syndicated profile] wrockreview_feed at Dreamwidth or [livejournal.com profile] wrockreview at Livejournal to follow along. It just started at the end of July. Reviewed so far: The Whomping Willows, The Remus Lupins, and now she's starting on Draco and the Malfoys.

Saw this notice on Wizrocklopedia [[livejournal.com profile] wizrocklopedia]: Yet another example of what wizard rockers are doing to decrease worldsuck:
Upon learning about families and children affected by natural disasters across the world, Megan, from The Wizard Rockumentary, and Mark, from Marked As His Equal, decided they wanted to help. Megan and Mark created From Beneath These Ashes, a 2-disc Wizard Rock compilation featuring over 30 Wizard Rock bands, and spanning both "light" and "dark" themes.

All of the proceeds from the compilation will go to Save the Children, "the leading independent organization creating lasting change in the lives of children in need in the United States and around the world.” Save the Children continues to help children and families who have been affected by disasters in our country, like hurricane relief in the Gulf Coast, and all over the world, such as the cyclones in Myanmar.

From Beneath These Ashes features previously unreleased songs from The Remus Lupins, Catchlove, House of Black, Draco and the Malfoys, and many other awesome Wizard Rock bands. There will be a limited run of hard copy CDs, so don’t forget to preorder! After the hard copies have run out, the compilation will remain online for purchase to continue raising funds.

Whether you see yourself singing along to the "light" side, rocking out to the "dark" side, or you just want to get an amazing CD in exchange for helping families in need, From Beneath These Ashes is sure to please.

See the track list here. Preorders are open now. You can reserve your copy here.
Yes, I ordered my copy, which is what I did today to make the world a better place.

I was going to do my Portus report tonight, but I'm feeling pretty yucky (digestive upset) and so am going to bed, but I just wanted to mention . . .

Remember the wizard rock song I wrote? I'd mentioned that [livejournal.com profile] marcgunn did a recording of it. I just learned that he's going to be releasing it on a CD next month.

And even better yet--I screwed up my courage and talked to the guys with Ministry of Magic about it. I got Jason to listen to it on my iPod--and he really likes it! And they said that they'd like to record it too and include it on a charity compilation CD. They're going to see about having Alex Carpenter of The Remus Lupins and Grant of The Weasel King collaborate with them on it, too. I had Alex listen to the song, since he was also there at Portus, and he liked it, too, and said he'd be willing to collaborate, and The Weasel King previously told me the same thing. Ministry of Magic told me via email today that they'll start working on new music later this summer, including this song, and they'll be in touch.

Woot! Ministry of Magic is going to record my song!
pegkerr: (Wizard Rock)
Here they are.

I agree with some (best song, "End of an Era," it's probably in my top five at least) disagree with others (best duo The Moaning Myrtles? Yeah, they're funny, but I prefer bands that can sing on pitch. RiddleTM sound vastly better to me.) I see The Parselmouths won Best EP for Illegal Love Potion, and that was a very good call, too. I thought Ministry of Magic's Triwizard Tournament would win for best album, but that award went to The Remus Lupins' I Was a Teenage Werewolf. Ministry of Magic did pick up some other awards, so it's all cool.

From Wizrocklopedia [[livejournal.com profile] wizrocklopedia]:
Wizard Rock took over Brown Paper Magazine’s October issue, the second issue of the bi-monthly independent magazine focused on "anything subversive, offensive, silly, edgy, confusing and obscene." Interviews with bands Harry and the Potters, Draco and the Malfoys, The Whomping Willows, The Butterbeer Experience, A Lightning Bolt Scar, The Moaning Myrtles and The Remus Lupins all appear in Issue 2 of BMP, as well as interviews with the dually amazing Harry Potter Alliance and Potterdelphia.

You can download the magazine here by clicking "Save Target As…" or visit their website!
Quite interesting. What I found particularly intriguing was the account of several bands about the very grassroots nature of the Wizard Rock phenomenon, as well as the imaginative and increasingly visable activist/fundraising work of Harry Potter Alliance (which works, among other things, for GLBT rights and to end the genocide in Dafur). I was particularly impressed by the Harry and the Potters interview, which detailed how much charitable work they have done.

I've had a LOT of people asking lately, so . . . here's a quick intro to Wizard Rock.

General information can be found at these sites:

1. Wizrocklopedia.com (syndicated at [livejournal.com profile] wizrocklopedia)

Here's the list of Wizard Rock bands (all hyperlinked to their various webpages) at wizrocklopedia

Here's wizrocklopedia's Beginner's Guide to Wizard Rock.

2. wizardrock.org (syndicated at [livejournal.com profile] wizardrock_org)

I keep an eye on these two sites because they'll announce which bands have released new downloads or CDs and I can check them out.

There are several podcasts that follow the wizard rock scene, although I haven't checked them out myself: WRock Club (which is put out by Wizrocklopedia), WZRD (your Wizard Rock station), The Podcast of Awesome, and Alley Cast. You can subscribe at iTunes.

I certainly don't download everything--there are a lot of bands that are really REALLY bad. But there are enough that are good--even excellent--that I keep an eye out. If you were interested in checking out the Wizard Rock scene, and want to start a modest little Wizard Rock playlist without spending a lot of money, here's what I'd suggest to give you a sample of a number of bands and songs that I enjoy )

That's it! I'd say my favorites right now are Oliver Boyd & The Remembralls, Ministry of Magic, Harry and the Potters (particularly their later stuff), Draco and the Malfoys, the Remus Lupins and the Whomping Willows. Tell me if you find anything you like (esp. "End of an Era.")

Just about the best thing I brought home from Lumos were the CDs I picked up at the Wizard rock concert: three CDs from the group Harry and the Potters (website here, MySpace here, song lyrics here), one from The Remus Lupins (website here, MySpace here), and one from Draco and the Malfoys (website here, MySpace here, lyrics here).

The girls ADORE them. A huge hit. Not the best rock groups you've ever heard, but they're having a ton of fun. Lyrics are amusing, too.
